Anxiety, Low Mood And Poor Sleep

Reading Time: 1 minute

Feeling low? On edge? Here are our go-to natural remedies for anxiety

It is well known that poor sleep increases the risk for developing anxiety (the worry of things to come) and depression (despair of what’s happening now), but it works the other way too: anxiety and depression also play havoc with sleep!  But don’t worry, if you have anxiety and/or a low mood, we have some very helpful recommendations which, whilst having a calming and uplifting effect on the nervous system, can also help with sleep.  Plus they are all naturally effective and safe to take which is why they are our go-to natural remedies for anxiety (and when we’re feeling a little low).

**A quick side note – whilst our beauty sleep SOS was designed specifically with sleep in mind, the ingredients oppose anxiety and an additional shot can be taken during the day for that reason**

Holy Basil – uplifting and relaxing

Take Holy Basil if chronic stress has resulted in low mood and poor immunity

Holy Basil has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine and has a long history of use as an immune booster.  This is interesting because stress is well known to lower the IMMUNE SYSTEM and reduce resistance to infection.  It has also been shown to help in generalised ANXIETY disorder and reduce symptoms of STRESS.  I view Holy Basil as an UPLIFTING and relaxing adaptogen.  A doctor friend finds it very helpful and uses it to keep her going strong through a long day.

St John’s Wort – antidepressant and lifts anxiety

Take St John’s Wort if you have low mood and anxiety

St John’s wort is one of my favourite herbs as it can have such a pronounced uplifting effect, particularly during the dark months.  Anxiety, depression and SAD (seasonal effective disorder) are widely recognised as causing sleep disturbances and scientific research has confirmed that St John’s wort can be helpful for all of these conditions. Because it is antiviral, it can be great for the immune system too.

**Occasionally St John’s Wort can cause photosensitivity (sensitivity to the sun). It should not be taken with the contraceptive pill, anti-epilepsy treatments and caution with other antidepressants. It should not be taken with MOA inhibitor After stopping these MOA inhibitor drugs you should wait 4 weeks before commencing St John’s Wort.**

Brahmi (Bacopa monierri) – clear, focused thinking

Take Brahmi if you have scattered, anxious thinking

Brahmi an Ayruvedic herb which has been used to enhance well-being for hundreds of years. It is used for poor focus, memory and concentration as it can help to focus and calm the mind. I would recommend this for a scattered, anxious mind and low mood.

Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) – improves mood in mild to moderate depression

Take Rhodiola if persistent stress has resulted in fatigue and depression

Rhodiola is classified as an adaptogen (a substance that helps to improve the body’s resistance to stress). Clinical trials have showed that is acts as an antidepressant in cases of mild to moderate depression and also helps with mental performance.

Magnesium– a commonly deficient and vitally important mineral

It has been estimated that three quarters of the population are magnesium deficient.  Many factors which are more associated with stress and modern living can contribute to magnesium deficiency including commonly prescribed pharmaceutical medications such as antacids, acid blockers, HRT, and steroids.

Magnesium deficiency can result in disorders of the nervous system including depression, anxiety, restlessness and fatigue.  In fact, there are recorded cases of rapid recovery from major depression following magnesium therapy.

We recommend this magnesium supplement because it is one of the most readily absorbed types of magnesium available.

Additional Information

We do not make these additional sleep aids, but they are recommended by Sophie in her clinic and you can get them either directly from the manufacturer via amazon or from Botanica Health online shop.  Botanica is run by Sophie’s sister, Naomi and it’s where Sophie’s clinic is located.  We have supplied the links to make it easy for you to get the products that we know are genuine and the real deal. As a thank you for the referral we get a small percentage of the purchase price which helps us to keep our website running.

You may need something from each step or just one small adjustment, everyone is different.  You can try several additional remedies or each one systematically for example:

Do give each remedy a good four to six weeks to feel the full benefits (your sleep quality and an increased sense of well-being are good indicators they are working for you). Although you can start to feel the benefits of taking these supplements quickly, full recovery can take longer for some and we believe that health and sleep are something we have to take care of daily. But, like Sophie and Sarah, you CAN get your sleep back.

Rest assured we are here to help you sleep. Stick with us and we will help good quality sleep become more than just a dream.
